Vanderbilt (cont'd.)
Playing with Schwartz were Michael Becker, Larry Cohen, David Berkowitz, Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd. Schwartz was trying for his third win in the contest. He was captain of the winning squads in 1997 (which also featured Robinson and Boyd) and 1998.
The Schwartz team had eliminated the defending champions led by Nick Nickell in a dramatic semifinal match. Their momentum seemed to carry through the first part of yesterday’s final, but Jacobs blunted their initiative by winning the third quarter by 24 IMPs.
Runners-up in the Vanderbilt Knockouts: Michael Becker, David Berkowitz, Richard Schwartz,
Larry Cohen, Steve Robinson and Peter Boyd.

Spring attendance record smashed
Reno 2004 still has a day to go, but it already
holds the record for the biggest Spring NABC.
The
total to date is 14,207 tables, 211 more than Reno
1998 which 13,996.
Attendance fell a bit yesterday, as it always
does on the second weekend. However, the total of

544.5 in the afternoon and 465.5 in the evening.

She’s hooked
Jean Liesmann Ungar of Port Charlotte FL, a
retired physician, came to Reno with Jerry, her
bridge-playing husband.
They made an agreement
when they got married — he didn’t have to do
gardening and she didn’t have to play bridge.
However, Jean decided to learn bridge finally so that
she could help Jerry when he directed on cruises.
Here in Reno, she had no intention of playing
since she played her first hand of bridge less thansix months ago. Then she attended Audrey Grant’s
classes, and the enthusiasm was contagious. She
felt compelled to play and she’s glad she did.
She
got her first red points on Wednesday and
immediately joined the ACBL.

Second in the Women's Pairs were Cynthia Balderson and Carole Miner.
