Said joins
10,000 club

Elaine Said has crossed the 10,000 masterpoint
milestone. Said, who has more than 100 regional
victories in her career, is a bridge instructor at the
Vanderbilt Bridge Club in Nashville TN.
“I work with my students eight or nine times
per week,” said Said.
Despite a lengthy list of bridge accomplishments,
Said’s favorite personal honor was being
named to the ACBL Goodwill Committee.
“Making people happy is more important to me
than any of my bridge titles,” she said.
Goodwill highlights: CPR,
a tie and a gift
Aileen Osofsky, Goodwill Committee chairman,
had some interesting goodwill stories to tell
yesterday at the Goodwill Committee reception.
One of them concerned a man who suffered a heart attack at the table a
few days ago, and Carol Huston gave him CPR to
keep him alive until professional help arrived.
She reported that he is doing well and may even
be back to the tournament in time to play a few
sessions. She
also emphasized
how
important it
is for everyone
to know
how to give
CPR because
the first few
minutes after
an attack are
critical.

The man who suffered the attack was playing in the final of one of the bracketed knockouts His teammates were looking for someone to sub for him, but they weren’t having much luck.
But McKenzie Myers, captain of the opposing team, told the short-handed team that his group didn’t want to win because of a forfeit or because of playing against a weakened team.
He said his team was willing to call it a tie if they wished and the ACBL agreed. So, as a result of this act of goodwill, the match ended in a tie.

Donna Compton had an interesting story to tell. She was talking to some friends at the craps table, and the conversation turned to bridge in
schools. Her friends were enthusiastic about the project.
Suddenly a man who was having a good streak turned to Compton and gave her $1000 worth of chips. “Here, put these to work in your program,” he said.
They meet at last
George Rosenkranz and Malcolm Brachman have known each other for more than 45 years, and they ave competed against each other countless times. But they had never played together in a pair event and they had never been on the same team.
That finally changed when they signed up as teammates in the first of the bracketed knockouts. It was a successful amalgamation – their team won the event.
It’s unlikely that any partnership with more combined years will win an event here. Between them Rosenkranz and Brachman count more than 160 years.

in Vanderbilt
In second-round Vanderbilt action, the top-ranked teams experienced little difficulty in advancing to today’s round of 32. There were a few upsets, however.
The highest seeded team to exit yesterday was the #13 squad captained by Mark Gordon. They were defeated by the four-man team led by Marc Zwerling 171–135.
