Treasurer’s Report

Ray distributed a financial report showing that the checking balance on August 31 was $3389 and there is now $19,2200.59 in CDs, for a total of $21,401.21.

Ray stated that since the Unit does not have a Federal ID, he had to use his own Social Security number to renew the CD and recommended that the Unit be incorporated as a non-profit and then get a Federal tax ID.  He also recommended that the Unit get liability and theft insurance to cover the days of the tournaments.  Charlie made a motion to get a legal advisor (namely, Bill Sullivan) to compare Indiana v. Kentucky regulation. This was seconded by Bobby; motion carried. Marvin suggested that this be discussed at the District meeting in Louisville to see what other clubs are doing.

 Tournament Update

·         Owensboro might not hold another October tournament. Many reasons for low attendance were offered: 1) The Unit has four tournaments clustered from July to November; 2) the Louisville tournament starts tomorrow; 3) competition from STaCs and so many special games; 4) too many novices are happy to play at their local club, but don’t want to travel to tournaments and Unit games.

·         Jasper, Nov. 22-23.  Recommendation that all Unit clubs support the first Jasper tournament.  Reminders were offered that Lon is to bring a computer and Marvin to supply bidding boxes, while Leroy is to bring supplies. Remember the time change in Jasper – leave home an hour early.

·         STaCs are finished for this year.

·         The next tournament in our Unit will be Owensboro, February 14-15, 2004

·         Evansville, July 15-17

·         Madisonville, September 10-12

·         Regional 2004.  Ray recommends that instead of starting Tuesday, we should start Monday evening.  There will be no extra cost for the hotel, but we’ll have to pay the director extra.  Ray suggests that since we are scheduled at the same dates as the Lake Geneva WI Regional, we need to promote our less-expensive hotel and free parking.

Lessons Update

·         Evansville is running Mini-Bridge as an after-school activity weekly in four middle schools.  There are 9 and 12 students in the first two schools, only 2 in the third school.  The fourth school hasn’t started yet so the number is unknown. The ACBL provides books, Easy-Deal cards, T-shirts, trophies and $270 stipend to the teacher.  There is a fair amount of red tape, including the need for police approval.

·         Henderson doesn’t know if they have enough students yet.

·         Madisonville. Richard offers a mini-lesson before the Monday/Tuesday game. Bobby may do 6-8 week lessons in the Junior and Senior High schools.

·         Vincennes scheduled Easy Bridge (4 tables) on Thursday evening. By popular request, Saturday morning has been added. Leroy does mini-lessons before the Wednesday game.

Unit Directory

Printing of the Unit Directory has been completed $100 under budget and these were distributed to club managers or representatives before and after this meeting, except for Jasper. Jasper’s books will be brought to their tournament next month. LeRoy was given sufficient copies to distribute to their current Mount Carmel participants.

New Business

Bill Miller has been circulating a petition in Mt. Carmel to drop membership in District 8 and join us in Unit 193 of District 11, and this will go to their next District Meeting. After that approval, they will then officially petition our district for acceptance.

Announcements

·         The Monday game in Madisonville has moved to Tuesday for the winter and will take place at the armory.  The Sunday game changes from 2 pm to 6 pm for the winter when the time changes.

·         Maida Slayton died at the age of 84.

·         Chris Kimmel has just become a director.

·         Club managers are reminded to report the death of a member to the ACBL.

·         Marvin reminded us that the next Midwest Monitor Deadline is November 25. Club news can be given to him at the Jasper tournament.

As Don Hayes was absent, Marcie moved that the meeting be adjourned at 10:20 am.

Respectfully submitted,

Marcie Harding
