Appendix C - Knockout Bracketing
Introduction
Principles: Assuming there are F four team groups and T head-to-head matches
The top F seeds playing will be assigned to 4-way matches.
The next T seeds will be assigned to 2-way matches.
The next 3 groups of F teams will be assigned to 4-ways.
The last T teams will be assigned to 2-ways.
The second seed in a four team group will be from the opposite final bracket if possible, otherwise from the opposite semifinal group.
If the second seed is from the opposite final group, the third seed will be from the same final group as the top seed but from the other semifinal group.
If the second seed is from the same final group as the top seed, the third seed will be from the other final group.
The fourth seed will be the complement of the third seed.
Within the restrictions of the above rules, the second seed in the group including the highest seed playing shall be the lowest seed among the second seeds.
No teams may be in the same 4-way group in both the first and second rounds.
As an example, consider the 48 team setup below. If we call the semifinal brackets 1,2,3, and 4, the top seed, 1 is from bracket 1, the second seed, 23, is from bracket 2, the third seed, 28, is from bracket 4. The fourth seed, 38, sums to 65 with the third seed. These are the two teams that are “expected” to meet in the KO round in the evening. Thus, no matter the outcome, no teams involved in the 4-way can meet again until the semi-finals.
In match 2, the second seed is from bracket 1, the third seed from bracket 3. The fourth seed again sums to 65 with the third.

For 131-171 use the following principles to determine pairings.
Principles for determining Pairings:
1. Determine the number of each type of grouping: If N is the number of teams actually playing in the round and R the number of teams who played remaining after the round, the number of 4-ways is given by A=R-N/2. The number of 2-ways is given by B=R-3A.
2. The top A teams playing are the top seeds in the 4-ways. The next B teams are the top seeds in the 2-ways. The next three groups of A teams play in the 4-ways and the bottom B teams are in the 2-ways.
3. The second seeds in the 4-ways are assigned by the following two rules: the highest seeded second seed is in the group with the lowest seeded top seed provided the two teams come from different finals brackets.
4. The third seeds are assigned by the following rules: the third seed must come from the opposite finals bracket from the top seed and from the opposite semifinals bracket from the second seed. Within those restrictions the highest seed among the third seeds goes in the highest bracket.
5. Rules 3 and 4 may need to be minimally broken.
For 172-256 teams reductions are to 128 using the above principles.
